The Izere Project began with a focus on literacy and Bible translation, but during the past few years the ministry has also developed into a major evangelistic and discipleship program among the Izere-speaking Afizere and Icen-speaking Icen people of Nigeria. We have now reached almost every village of Izereland with 50 volunteer workers working in over 160 villages to provide ongoing training in literacy and the study of the Bible. We wanted to bring the Word of God to the Izere and Icen speaking people not only in printed form but also visually, and have accomplished that by translating the Jesus Film into Izere and showing it in the villages. As we started showing the film many thousands accepted Christ which presented the challenge of how to follow up with them and teach the pastors to work with new believers. As a consequence we developed a program and are now working together discipling over 6,000 villagers. Where no churches existed, eight new churches have been planted and are growing strong. The goal is to have thousands of people eagerly awaiting the publishing of the Izere New Testament in 2006, able to read it, and hungering for God's Word in their own heart language.
